NURTURING FUTURES PROGRAM
The Nurturing Futures Program is dedicated to creating a supportive and nurturing environment for children in partner schools and orphanages throughout Mozambique. By addressing fundamental needs, we ensure that these children have the resources and care required to thrive and reach their full potential. Our comprehensive support includes providing school uniforms, clothes, toys, food, healthcare supplies, and other essential items.

THE GIVING GENIE MAGIC-QUILLOW PROJECT
The Giving Genie Magic-Quillow Project is a heartfelt initiative designed to offer comfort, safety, and self-care education to children in orphanages and group homes. Inspired by a personal experience of childhood trauma and the comfort of a simple pillow, this project aims to create a sense of security for children who may feel isolated or scared in their new environments.
Imagine being a child who has just entered an unfamiliar place, without the comforting presence of family. The Giving Genie Magic-Quillow Project helps bridge that gap by providing children with a specially designed quillow—a combination of a quilt and pillow—along with crucial safety and self-care education.

CURRICULUM
Our Genie Safe curriculum is designed to equip young leaders in Mozambique with the essential skills to build safer, more resilient communities. Imagine a program where students don't just learn from textbooks, but actively engage in real-world scenarios. We delve into understanding local risks, like flooding and disease, and provide practical training in disaster preparedness, including early warning systems and evacuation procedures. Students learn vital public health skills—from sanitation to disease prevention—and become advocates for healthy practices within their communities. Through hands-on activities and community projects, we empower these ‘Jovens Mentores’ to become agents of change, sharing life-saving knowledge and fostering a culture of safety. Genie Safe isn’t just about learning; it’s about empowering young people to actively shape a safer future for themselves and their communities

GENIE READ
The Genie Read – Learn to Read Program is an early childhood literacy initiative developed by The Giving Genie to support children in marginalized communities across Mozambique. The program focuses on children from pre-primary through second grade, helping them build strong English-language literacy skills during the most critical years of cognitive and academic development. Learning to read before the age of ten is essential for a child’s success, as reading ability is closely linked to vocabulary growth, academic achievement, and long-term educational outcomes. Through Genie Read, The Giving Genie works to close literacy gaps and create pathways for stronger educational opportunities and brighter futures for children and their communities.

PROGRAM APPROACH
Genie Read uses a blended learning approach that combines virtual storytelling sessions through Zoom and in-person reading support provided by trained teachers. The program incorporates interactive and engaging teaching strategies that allow children to actively participate in learning. Instruction focuses on building core literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and comprehension. Through storytelling, reading exercises, and structured learning activities, children develop the confidence and skills needed to become independent readers.
TEACHING METHODS
To support different learning styles and ensure effective literacy development, Genie Read integrates multiple evidence-based reading methods. These include the Phonics Method, which teaches children how letters and sounds work together to decode words; the Whole-Word Approach, which helps children recognize words by sight through repeated exposure to text, images, and audio; and the Language Experience Method, which allows children to learn to read words that are meaningful to them and then combine those words into stories connected to their own experiences. By combining these approaches, the program supports children who may learn in different ways and ensures that all participants have the opportunity to develop strong reading skills.
PROGRAM IMPACT
The Genie Safe Initiative is designed to:
-
Promote Resilience: Build resilience by teaching practical skills for disaster preparedness.
-
Enhance Safety Awareness: Increase awareness of local risks and how to address them.
-
Support Community Engagement: Encourage students to take an active role in improving community safety and health.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
The Genie Read program follows a play-based literacy framework designed to create an engaging and supportive learning environment. Classroom activities include phonics instruction, vocabulary building exercises, storytelling sessions, and guided reading practice. Children participate in interactive classroom tasks that encourage active learning and collaboration while building the foundational skills necessary to reach reading proficiency by the end of second grade.
MONITORING PROGRESS
Student progress is carefully monitored using a variety of literacy assessments and evaluation methods. Teachers evaluate letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and reading fluency through structured activities such as identifying letters, sorting uppercase and lowercase letters, distinguishing letters from numbers and symbols, and reading short passages aloud. These assessments help measure each child’s reading development while guiding teachers in adapting instruction to meet the needs of every learner.
TRAINING AND RESOURCES
The Giving Genie provides the Genie Read curriculum, teaching materials, storybooks, and literacy resources used throughout the program. Teachers receive training and guidance to effectively implement the curriculum and support students’ reading development. By equipping educators with the necessary tools and resources, the program ensures consistent, high-quality instruction that helps children develop strong literacy foundations.
ENGAGING PARENT AND CARE GIVERS
Parental and caregiver involvement is a key component of Genie Read. The program encourages families to actively support their children’s learning by understanding the importance of early literacy and practicing reading activities at home. Through this engagement, parents and caregivers play an essential role in strengthening reading comprehension, building confidence, and helping children succeed academically.
MEASURING IMPACT
The success of the Genie Read program is measured through several indicators, including the number of children enrolled and successfully learning to read English, the effectiveness and quality of teaching and learning materials, the cost efficiency of program delivery, and feedback from teachers, parents, caregivers, and partners. As the program grows, The Giving Genie aims to expand Genie Read to reach more children across Mozambique through strategic partnerships, additional teacher training, and sustainable funding opportunities.
